Responsibility. Leadership. Sportsmanship. Accountability to yourself and to your team. How to accept coaching.
These are just some of the things young people can learn from sports.
They’re also important skills that Oregon Youth Authority staff try to teach the youth in custody.
So it makes sense that OYA would have a robust athletics program. OYA hosts five all-facility tournaments each year: flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and cross country.
Those who attend these tournaments will see an environment much like what they might see at a community sports event, with families cheering on their children, and athletes and coaches working hard to do their best.
This photo gallery gives a glimpse of the flag football tournament held in late September at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility.
Congratulations to the team from Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility, who were tournament champions. We also recognize these players and teams who won additional awards:
Tournament runner-up: Camp Tillamook
MVP: Jeffrey T., Rogue Valley
Offensive Player of the Tournament: Tanner D., Camp Tillamook
Defensive Player of the Tournament: TJ S., MacLaren Bobcats
Hustle Award: William S., Eastern Oregon YCF
Individual Sportsmanship: Christopher B., Tillamook YCF
Team Sportsmanship: Eastern Oregon Warriors
Finally, a big thanks to Ray Leary from The I Am Academy for connecting OYA last year with Adidas. That connection has led to a partnership where Adidas has donated gear to our young athletes. Adidas also designed and donated a helmet for us to use as the annual flag football tournament trophy.
