Teams of youth from six Oregon Youth Authority facilities convened at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility Dec. 19-21 to compete in the agency’s annual basketball tournament.
Camp Riverbend, Camp Tillamook, Eastern Oregon Youth Correctional Facility, MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility, Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility, and Camp Florence all had teams participating in the holiday tournament.
The basketball event is one of four all-facility tournaments held annually in OYA facilities. The other tournaments are for flag football, volleyball, and soccer.
According to OYA recreation coordinator Rod Martin, sportsmanship has been the priority for these tournaments, as OYA staff work with the youth on the meaning of healthy competition.
The Camp Tillamook Gladiators narrowly defeated the MacLaren Bobcats in the championship match to win the tournament. The Bobcats came into the match undefeated, having won against the Gladiators in a game the previous day.
