This month we celebrate National Foster Care Month, a recognition especially relevant to our work. Many of OYA’s youth have lived, are currently residing, or will transition to foster care at some point.
We are so grateful for our current foster families who have opened up their homes to support and care for our youth. Our foster parents provide safe and nurturing environments for our youth in order for them to thrive, develop skills, and go on to lead productive crime-free lives.

Right now there are some critical needs that our staff have been working towards:
The OYA Foster Care Unit continuously has a waiting list for youth needing a foster care placement. It is crucial to do successful matches between youth and foster parents. OYA is in need of more foster homes, and more foster homes that meet our youth’s diverse needs.
OYA currently has approximately 20 certified homes with a capacity of approximately 38 beds. We need new homes in all areas of the state.
Foster parents receive training and support to help ensure success as well as 24/7 access to OYA professionals who will answer any questions. Youth placed in homes will have health care coverage and foster parents will receive a monthly reimbursement to cover expenses.
While foster care may be viewed as a challenging environment for youth and potential foster parents — it is more than this. It is a transformative experience that is positive and meaningful for youth and families.
